April. 2, 2007 - French Government Selects SkylineGlobe for its 3D National Geospatial Web Portal
(back to top)

Chantilly, VA, April 2, 2007 –The French 3D ‘Geoportail’, scheduled to open to the general public in late summer 2007, will be based on the SkylineGlobe Enterprise solution from Skyline Software Systems, Inc. It will be the first and only 3D globe that includes high resolution imagery covering entire France and will include the ability to interactively fly over highly realistic 3D terrain and urban environments.

‘Geoportail’ is an initiative of the French National Geographical Institute (IGN) and is the reference portal for access to all French state and private sector geographical data, intended for the general public as well as professionals. The web site development as well as database management is being handled by I.G.O. a Vinci company using SkylineGlobe as a multiplatform web based application (Windows, Mac and Linux). The entire project including technical implementation and server architecture is managed by ATOS ORIGIN. The new interactive 3D ‘Geoportail’ is designed to utilize multiple servers for redundancy and load management to support many thousands of concurrent users.

‘The SkylineGlobe architecture allows IGN to update parts of the multi-terabyte imagery data immediately as they are received without having to rebuild the entire database – this was critical to them’ said Arik Katz, senior vice president of engineering at Skyline. ‘After a long review process of available 3D solutions, IGN came to a conclusion that SkylineGlobe with its extensive API is the only solution that would let them create the scaleable customized web-based application that they wanted’ he continued.

“France will be the first country to create their own web based public 3D Earth portal” said Mr. Eli Weisbrod, of S.L.I, the local Skyline distributor in France. “This marks an important shift in the web 3D Earth scene as now with SkylineGlobe any commercial or government organization can create a privately labeled web based 3D globe application.” Mr. Weisbrod added.

April 4, 2006 - Federal Court Issues a Prompt Trial Date in Skyline's Patent Case Against Google Earth
(back to top)

SKYLINE, VA, April 4, 2006. In a patent infringement case asserted against Google Earth (Google's 3D mapping software) a federal court judge in Massachusetts has issued an expedited discovery and trial schedule in response to plaintiff Skyline Software System's request for a preliminary injunction. The court has not yet ruled on the motion, but issued a claim construction determination and gave Skyline a prompt trial date - usually a strong indication that the court views the claims of patent infringement as having real substance.

In patent cases, the court provides a claim construction or interpretation of certain terms used in the patent claims. The court split on the interpretation of the claims proposed by the parties and reserved the right to revisit the interpretation, as the issues are refined. Most of the differences in the claim construction were minor, involving the addition or deletion of a word or two from the parties' proposed interpretations. The relevance of the claim construction must await the application of the claim construction to the methods actually used by Google Earth.

Skyline's President Ronnie Yaron stated "the court's expedited trial schedule and the issuance of the claim construction are a real victory for Skyline. Skyline is an innovator in this field of 3D mapping and has been trying to schedule a prompt trial where it believes the infringement issues are straightforward. Google can no longer delay the process."

January 12, 2005 - Museum of Chinese in the Americas - Mapping Our Heritage Project: History at Your Fingertips
(back to top)

Opening Reception
When: Wednesday, January 12, 2005, 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Where: Museum of Chinese in the Americas; 70 Mulberry St., 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10013

Chinatown, New York – Wandering the streets of New York City Chinatown and observing the diverse architecture and dramatic streetscape, it’s not uncommon to wonder, “If these walls could talk, what would they say?” The Museum of Chinese in the Americas begins to take the guesswork out of the question when it unveils the prototype of its Mapping Our Heritage Project – a pioneering three-dimensional, interactive map of New York’s “Old Chinatown” district. Mapping Our Heritage Project is a national model for how technology can be applied to a neighborhood’s cultural and historical preservation.

Mapping Our Heritage Project is a collaborative effort between MoCA, New York University Asian/Pacific/American Studies Program & Institute, Environmental Simulation Center, and Resolution Seven. The team created a fully interactive virtual kiosk that can potentially provide people with access to a range of information on Chinatown – such as statistical and biographical data, historical photos, documents, individual oral histories, and artifacts. Visitors engage with an 8-block area of New York known as historic “Old Chinatown” by clicking on or “visiting” an address to not only see artifacts, photos, documents, and oral histories connected to that place, but also to submit their own personal accounts and memories of Chinatown. This format provides a new way of exploring and writing the history of Chinese Americans in New York and expands the public’s participation in the ongoing process of reclaiming and interpreting the community’s diverse cultures and histories.

Duy Linh Tu, Partner/Creative Director of Resolution Seven says, “The Mapping Our Heritage Project is a uniquely collaborative one. It’s the first project of its kind that we’ve all worked on, and I think it will help to raise the bar on so many levels: technical achievement, design creativity, and innovation in the ways we tell cultural and historical stories. It really is the first time that culture and technology have combined in a way that is exciting, engaging, and makes sense for the user.”

Roy Chan, of the Environmental Simulation Center says, “For the first time, virtual reality technology is being used to see history in a new, interactive way. Integrating cutting edge technology with their extensive, growing archives MoCA has embarked on an innovative approach to presenting and gathering the history of New York Chinatown. MoCA has worked closely with the Environmental Simulation Center during the past three years to develop a computer simulated, photo-realistic model of New York Chinatown… Through interactive menus, [visitors] will also be able to share their own stories and photos to these specific sites, making them a part of the documentation process to the project’s growing database.”

A unique vehicle that will not only serve as a repository of information, but also as a tool to solicit personal stories and memories of the neighborhood, the Mapping Our Heritage Project becomes a means by which community volunteers, students, residents and organizations can play a crucial role in helping to gather new information, images and artifacts on the New York Chinese community. A recent example is MoCA’s partnership with the Columbia University Oral History Research Office and New York University Child Study Center to support the work of students from the area’s public schools by providing them a public venue for their oral history projects through the Mapping Our Heritage Project.

The Mapping Our Heritage Project is supported by a Resources for Change Technology Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Of several hundred applicants, MoCA was invited to apply for the competitive multiyear funding and was one of 25 organizations around the nation to be awarded this prestigious grant. The Mapping Our Heritage Project kiosk will launch January 12, 2005. For more information, interviews, and photos, contact Museum Associate William Dao at (212)619-4785 or wdao@moca-nyc.org.

MoCA is chartered by the New York State Department of Education and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Mapping Our Heritage is made possible with the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts, Resources for Change Technology Grant; the Chevron Texaco Foundation; and Verizon.

WOBURN, MASSACHUSETTS. JULY 29, 2002 -- Skyline introduced today the new release of Skyline's TerraGate® v3.0, the industry's leading powerful network data server designed to stream 3D geographic data, created with the TerraBuilder® in real-time to TerraExplorer® and TerraExplorer Pro users. Part of the Skyline 3D networked based TerraSuite™, TerraGate v3.0 follows a client-server model that has been optimized to potentially handle thousands of concurrent users accessing virtually unlimited sized 3D terrain databases in low to high bandwidth situations

Highlights of the new version include:

1. FlyGen® Extension - Offered as an extension to TerraGate 3.0, FlyGen, a commercial off-the-shelf component, along with its scripting language, allows the generation of specific and targeted flying experiences in real-time, by creating TerraExplorer® FLY files over the Internet. For users interested in interacting with existing GIS and modeling applications, this is an ideal extension.

2. TerraGate Management console - The TerraGate Management console is a management and configuration tool allowing the user to control and monitor Skyline server applications, change configurations, view performance and statistics, add maps, etc. The TerraGate Management console controls both the TerraGate streamer and FlyGen components.

3. Security - Support for secured MPT databases, to be used with the new TerraBuilder v1.6 extension, DirectConnect.

"This new release and especially the addition of the FlyGen component, opens new channels and uses for the TerraGate and our entire TerraSuite architecture", states Arik Katz, Vice President of Skyline Software Systems.
